Tacoma's light rail runs a short, mostly flat line through the parts of the city a visitor actually wants to see. This is how we would spend a full day on it — seven stops, in order, with the walking in between kept sensible.
This is the car-free version of a day in Tacoma. If you are driving, use the general first-day plan instead — it covers the same city without assuming you are on the line.
Times of day below are pacing suggestions, not departure times. Service, fares, and venue hours are set by Sound Transit and by each place — confirm before you go.
Numbered stops follow the itinerary. Alignment and walk paths are simplified editor-drawn geometry for orientation, not navigation.
1 · Morning · Tacoma Dome Station
Arrive at Tacoma Dome Station
If you come in by Sounder, Amtrak, or regional bus, this is where you land, and the T Line platform is part of the same complex. Grab something from the food counters inside Freighthouse Square before you board.
2 · Late morning · Union Station / S 19th St
Museum district and the Bridge of Glass
The single best stop on the line. Look inside the Union Station rotunda, pick one museum rather than three, then walk the Chihuly Bridge of Glass over the freeway to the Museum of Glass and the Thea Foss waterway below.
3 · Lunch · Theater District / S 9th St
Lunch on Broadway
Ride four minutes north to the theater district for the densest run of downtown restaurants. Afterwards walk down the Spanish Steps and back up — it is the most characterful two minutes downtown.
4 · Early afternoon · Old City Hall
Bluff-edge views
One stop on. Old City Hall's 1893 clock tower, then Fireman's Park for an open view across the port and Commencement Bay.
5 · Afternoon · Stadium District
Stadium High School and the historic blocks
The hilliest part of the day and the best-known building in the city. Take in the Stadium Bowl overlook, then wander the North Slope's Victorian and Craftsman streets before dropping back to the district's shops.
6 · Late afternoon · S 4th St
Wright Park breather
Two stops later, a flat 27-acre arboretum with specimen trees and easy loop paths. The Seymour Botanical Conservatory sits inside the park — confirm current hours before you count on it.
7 · Evening · Hilltop District
Dinner on MLK Way
Finish where the eating is best right now. The Hilltop District station puts you on Martin Luther King Jr Way, with restaurants, bakeries, and bars along several blocks and murals in between.
If you have less time
Half a day: ride to Union Station for the museum district and the Bridge of Glass, then Theater District for lunch. Two hours: Union Station only — it is the one stop that justifies the trip on its own.
