LeMay - America's Car Museum

Four floors of American automotive history beside the Tacoma Dome

America's Car Museum is the largest attraction in Tacoma's Dome District and the one most likely to surprise visitors who do not consider themselves car people. The building descends as a single spiralling ramp past themed floors, so the visit has a natural route rather than a maze of rooms: pre-war craftsmanship, post-war optimism, racing, custom culture and rotating loans from private collections. Because vehicles are shown at floor level without heavy barriers, the scale of the machines registers in a way photographs never manage. Families tend to move quickly; enthusiasts can lose an afternoon in the lower galleries. It stands directly above the Tacoma Dome, which makes it an easy pairing with an event evening rather than a trip that needs its own excuse.

What to know

  • Vehicles rotate in and out of the galleries, so a specific car seen on a previous visit may not be on the floor.

Editor's tips

  • Start at the top of the ramp and walk down; the museum is designed to be read in that direction and it saves doubling back.
  • It pairs naturally with an evening event at the Tacoma Dome, which is immediately downhill.
